|Samarkand. The evening|
(1991, canvas, oil, 52 x 35 cm)
On the northern outskirts of Samarkand, on the edge of the Afrasiab hill there are groups of mausoleums. The most famous one is the tomb of Kussam, son of Abbas, a cousin of the Prophet Muhammad.
Kussam arrived in Samarkand in 676. According to some sources he was killed, according to the others he died a natural death; some reports say he did not die in Samarkand, but in Merv. The people know Kussam as Shah-i-Zinda - "The Living King". According to the legends of Samarkand he was gone from this world alive. That is where the nickname "The Living King" came from. On the Kussam's tombstone there are written the following verses from the Qur'an: "And do not think of those who are killed in the way of Allah as dead. Nay! They are alive"
