|The Buddhist Stupa in Hadda. Afghanistan|

The excavations in the Afghanistan cities Bamiyan, Bagram, Hadda, Kandahar and Kunduz have revealed a number of Buddhist settlements. In the modern village Hadda there were found 531 stupas and 3000 Buddha statues and bodhisattva made from clay and plaster. Hadda is the ancient name of "Nagarahara". In about 400 year Hadda was visited by Fa Hien. In 630 Xuanzang traveled in these places. Both of these pilgrims arrived from China via Afghanistan to visit the land of Sakyamuni. Xuanzang lived here for 18 years, at first as a student and then as a teacher at Nalanda University. There he studied students from all over the world, including Afghanistan and Iran. As a part of the educational programme there was an Art History, and it was very difficult to get into there. They say, the applicants have been waiting for years near the gate of Nalanda to pass the entrance exam. The Stupas are dedicated to the events associated with the Buddha's Parinirvana.
